THE
MERRY TIMES
BONNIE and JIM HOBDEN, longtime members
of the Saint Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church in New Orleans, have
spent much of the year preparing meals for volunteers
who come to their church to help with Hurricane Katrina cleanup. When
they first began feeding groups in October 2005, Bonnie remarked, “It made perfect
sense to provide their meals, since grocery stores in New Orleans were either
not open, or had limited hours and were not particularly well stocked. Then we
just continued because the groups seemed really to appreciate that the food is
there, and at the end of a rather arduous day, the meal is on the table. The
groups are amazing in their enthusiasm and willingness to get the job done.” Jim
is backup and helper to Bonnie for meals and has been an on-site coordinator
for home-gutting and rebuilding. He drives a truck taking groups to work
locations. It has been particularly rewarding for him to watch the groups
develop relationships
with the homeowners they are there to help.
